Google Defends Letting Humans Listen to Virtual Assistant Queries

Of course Google employees listen to audio files recorded by its digital assistant and smart speakers.

But for good reason.

“As part of our work to develop speech technology for more languages, we partner with language experts around the world who understand the nuances and accents of a specific language,” Google Search project manager David Monsees wrote in a blog post.

That’s all fine and dandy—until someone leaks confidential audio data.

Belgian news site VRT NWS on Wednesday claimed it was able to listen to “more than a thousand recordings,” most of which were made consciously.
