Facebook Expands Instagram Messenger API Availability

August 16, 2021

The Facebook Messenger API, which was initially launched in beta in late 2020, has been on a staged rollout schedule slowly working toward broad general availability. Facebook originally outlined this schedule in early June 2021 and has now provided an update on availability.

When ProgrammableWeb first reported on the staged rollout, the social media giant offered what seemed to be an aggressive timeline:

“Initially, only businesses with Instagram follower accounts between 10,000 and 100,000 will be able to gain access. Phase two, which is intended to happen in July of 2021, will expand the lower threshold to include all accounts below 10,000 followers. Finally, Facebook plans to remove all follower restrictions with phase 3 sometime in the third quarter of this year.”
