My process begins by asking, “What happens when this fails, and who might this exclude?” This is followed by a “well-being audit” where we cross-reference high-performing designs against the principles of humane technology. If a design utilizes a dark pattern—like infinite scroll or variable rewards—to boost metrics, I exercise my “director’s veto” based on long-term brand trust rather than short-term gains. We must be the guardians who say, “We could do this, but we shouldn’t,” because the machine lacks the moral compass to understand the quiet rage of a manipulated user.

While technology can process massive amounts of behavioral data, it cannot experience the anxiety of submitting sensitive info or the frustration of a broken form. In my experience designing complex fraud alert platforms, the most valuable insights didn’t come from data points, but from the brains of customer-facing teams who live through the users’ frustrations daily. To integrate these “goldmines,” I treat qualitative stories as the primary constraints for the AI’s prompts, ensuring the machine builds for the “why” rather than just the “what.” Human-led methods like contextual inquiry and deep-dive user interviews remain absolutely irreplaceable because empathy isn’t a dataset; it’s a lived experience. You cannot automate the feeling of vulnerability a user has when sharing sensitive data, so we must manually inject that sensitivity into the workflow to ensure the design feels supportive rather than robotic.

As the cost of producing design variations drops, the ability to make high-level strategic decisions becomes a scarce skill. How do you manage the “movie director” role when reviewing dozens of layout options at once? How do you ensure the final product maintains a coherent story and emotional resonance for the end user?

Managing dozens of variations at once requires a sharp eye for “intent” rather than execution; I look for the options that best translate business goals into human impact. I use the “storyboard” method to ensure that while the components might be AI-generated, the narrative arc of the user journey remains consistent and emotionally grounded. It is easy to get lost in a sea of beautiful options, so I constantly ground the review process by asking, “Which of these layouts reduces cognitive load for a first-time user?” By maintaining this focus, I ensure the final product isn’t just a collection of efficient screens, but a coherent experience that feels sensible and fair to the person on the other side of the glass.

Design systems live or die by consistency, a task where automation excels. When we delegate the “boring stuff” like spacing systems and accessibility compliance to AI, the human designer’s responsibility shifts toward high-level system architecture and creative disruption. We are no longer the “police” of the design system; we are its architects, deciding when the rules should be broken to create moments of meaningful novelty. I handle the trade-off by letting the machine maintain the 90% of the system that requires rigid consistency, which frees me to manually craft the 10% that requires “human spark.” This balance ensures that the product remains accessible and compliant in enterprise environments without becoming a monotonous, cookie-cutter interface.
